Becoming : Adapted for Young Readers by Michelle Obama - Book Review

Michelle Obama, the first lady of the 44th president of the United States, a mother of two, and an inspiring role model to me and millions of others worldwide. She's got to have an autobiography, right? Correct! She totally has an autobiography! Took a while for it to appear at Walmart for me to buy, but nevertheless, I finally read it!

Genre

'Becoming' by Michelle Obama is a Memoir Autobiography book. The majority of the book involves memories. Memories of her childhood, sad memories of losses in her life, and even memories from the white house that may not seem as positive. More importantly, she gives credit to everyone in her life that helped shape her into who she is now.

Synopsis

Michelle talks about small moments in her life instead of big feats. The book involves three sections: Becoming Me, Becoming Us, and Becoming More. In 'Becoming Me,' she talks about childhood and her education. Her competitiveness

makes her work harder everyday. She also met Barack and they both fell in love. In 'Becoming Us,' she talks about how she met Barack Obama and started a family. Let's just say that Barack had some tricks up his sleeve to impress Michelle! Michelle became a hard working mom, often having to do everything herself due to Barack's busy schedule. This was all while working a full time job that she later changes. Michelle was skeptical to the idea of Barack running for president at first. She talks about her concerns with how her kids would grow up in such a spotlight. In the end she agrees, keeping in mind that they would have to do everything two times better due to their race. Many ridiculed Barack, but the family kept campaigning. In the end, (obviously) Barack became the 44th president of the United States. In 'Becoming More,' Michelle talks about her not so positive experience at the White House. She was definitely grateful to have such a home and luxurious life, but being First Lady wasn't simple. One factor that made her stay at the White House not so enjoyable were the extensive White House protection protocols. The immense protocols took a toll on the childhood of both her daughters. Her daughters had to go to school in a bullet-proof car, followed by many other cars, and had to have people monitoring at all times. Michelle expresses her worry for her daughters many times in the book, not being afraid to show her mom life. She attended funerals for people who were killed in other countries, visited military service members, and even went to school events. In the end, she explains the peaceful transfer of power to Donald Trump and his wife. After leaving the White House, she had a sense of normalcy in her life, never thinking to return to politics.

My Rating

This book seems to be a great book once you finish it. The thing is, it's not a page turner for me. I love books with suspense rather than memoir books, so, I found it hard to pick up and read this book. On the other hand, this book is great for young readers who are still finding their purpose. Michelle gives many life lessons in her book. She highlights the main message: We are all still becoming. Taking the reader through her life is unique to any other autobiography. This is because Michelle seems very connected to normal people like us, compared to superstars with major life achievements. All in all, I give this book 4 stars!
